Federal investigators are examining the conduct of two men who managed Jeffrey Epstein's financial and legal affairs, with the FBI leading an inquiry that has included witness interviews, according to a law enforcement source who spoke with NBC News.
Attorney Darren Indyke and accountant Richard Kahn, who serve as executors of Epstein's estate, are the subjects of the investigation, the source told NBC News. The source also indicated that witness interviews have been conducted as part of the ongoing probe.
Daniel Ruzumna, an attorney representing Indyke and Kahn, confirmed that an investigation is underway. He stated that officials have spoken with at least one individual who had business dealings with Epstein, according to NBC News.
Ruzumna further told NBC News that neither of his clients has received a subpoena, nor have they been requested to sit for an FBI interview. He also said the pair has not been informed that they are under investigation.
In defending his clients, Ruzumna noted that prior federal inquiries in 2018 and 2019 concluded without Indyke and Kahn being identified as co-conspirators.
The Justice Department, when contacted by NBC News, declined to confirm or deny the existence of any investigation. "We don't comment on the existence, or lack thereof, of investigations," the department said in a statement to NBC News. "We have always said with regard to Epstein that if the evidence presents itself, we will investigate."
The inquiry unfolds against the backdrop of civil litigation involving Epstein's estate. A woman identified as "Amy" and a Jane Doe have filed suit, alleging that photographs showing them partially unclothed as children were part of the late financier's collection of child pornography. Indyke and Kahn are named as co-defendants in that lawsuit.
