A pioneering conservation effort in Argentina has achieved remarkable success in restoring giant anteaters to their native habitat, demonstrating that carefully managed reintroduction programs can reverse local extinctions.
La Fundación Rewilding Argentina launched the world's first giant anteater reintroduction initiative in 2007 within the Iberá Wetlands, located in the province of Corrientes. Nearly two decades later, the program has transformed a landscape where the species had been completely absent into a thriving habitat supporting around 200 individual anteaters.
The giant anteater, known locally as yurumí, had vanished from Corrientes during the mid-20th century. The species fell victim to multiple threats including poaching, fires, and the degradation of its natural habitat.
Throughout the operational phase of the project, conservation teams worked with 110 giant anteaters that were either rescued or rehabilitated specifically for release into the Corrientes wilderness. These animals included orphaned individuals and those that had strayed too close to human settlements and required intervention.
The program's success extends beyond the initial releases. Many of the 110 reintroduced anteaters have reproduced in the wild, generating steady population growth and establishing multiple generations of animals born and raised entirely in their natural wetland environment. These wild-born offspring have proven well-adapted to the ecosystem, indicating the sustainability of the restored population.
The methodology developed through this giant anteater program has broader implications for conservation efforts. La Fundación Rewilding Argentina reports that the techniques and protocols established during this initiative now serve as a foundation for reintroducing other key species, including both predators and herbivores, across various ecosystems in the region, including additional areas within Iberá.
The achievement represents a significant milestone in wildlife restoration, proving that species can successfully reclaim territories from which they have been absent for generations when provided with appropriate support and habitat conditions.
