Gladys Knight Announces Plan to Scale Back Performances

Legendary singer Gladys Knight has revealed plans to reduce her live performance schedule, marking a significant transition in a career spanning more than seven decades.

The 82-year-old artist shared her decision through an Instagram post on Thursday, August 27, explaining the choice came after considerable reflection on her career and personal priorities.

"After much soul searching I've decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward," Knight wrote on Instagram. "I'll be spending more time on projects with my husband and visiting with my grandbabies and am looking forward to this new era."

The announcement represents a shift rather than a complete retirement, with Knight indicating she will continue performing on a more limited basis while pursuing other ventures and dedicating time to family.

In her statement, Knight expressed deep appreciation for the support she has received throughout her extraordinary career. "I'd like to take a moment, in advance, to thank all my fans over this last three quarters of a century for making a little girl's dream come true and supporting her every step of the way," she wrote on Instagram. "I am immensely grateful to all of you and send my eternal love back to you. I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road. God bless all of you and hope to see you soon."

The response from fans has been overwhelmingly supportive, with followers praising Knight for prioritizing her well-being and expressing gratitude for her contributions to music.

"Thank you for the memories and the melodies. You have blessed us so much. Relax and enjoy the fruit of your labor," one follower wrote in the comments section of her Instagram post.

Another fan commented on her musical legacy, writing: "You are world-class and one of the best altos I've ever heard. A true lover of the musical art! Thank you for all you've contributed to the world!"

The announcement follows a period of public concern about Knight's health and performance schedule. In August 2025, her son Shanga Hankerson, 49, expressed worries about her participation in the Queens Tour, describing it to People as potentially harmful to her health. Hankerson claimed Knight's husband William McDowell, who also serves as her manager, had encouraged the tour, though McDowell denied pressuring Knight to work.

Knight responded to those concerns at the time with a statement provided to Us Weekly, saying: "I'm sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented. I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right? I'm healthy and happy and visiting friends and family these last few months. I'm excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with The Queens Tour. See you soon."

Hankerson also spoke to The Shade Room in an August 13 story, expressing specific concerns about his mother's memory and well-being while touring. "I don't want my mom out on tour on a tour bus, wondering where she's at," Hankerson told The Shade Room. "I don't want that for her. That's my mom, I truly love her and don't care about her ever working a second longer while she's alive. The direction that she's going in is pushing her to her departure, and I don't want to see that."

Knight's decision to scale back performances appears to balance her desire to continue connecting with audiences while addressing personal and family considerations. Her statement emphasized that this transition represents a new chapter rather than an ending, with plans to remain active in selected projects alongside her husband while enjoying more time with her grandchildren.
