Golden Nugget Workers Approve New Contract, Bally's Next

Workers at Golden Nugget Atlantic City have approved a new one-year labor agreement, marking another step forward in contract negotiations across our city's casino industry.

Local 54 of the Unite Here casino workers union ratified the contract on Thursday night, according to CDC Gaming. The approval means Bally's Atlantic City now stands as the sole casino property without a new labor deal in place.

Union representatives are scheduled to meet with Bally's management next week to hammer out terms for that property's agreement.

The wave of one-year contracts reflects the significant uncertainties currently facing Atlantic City's gaming sector. Union leadership has opted for shorter-term agreements rather than multi-year deals as the industry navigates a period of major transition.

Among the challenges ahead: three new casinos are expected to open in New York City within the next year or two, creating fresh competition for Atlantic City's market share. Meanwhile, state lawmakers in Trenton are mounting another effort to put North Jersey casino expansion before voters in a referendum.

Closer to home, ongoing advocacy by some casino employees to implement a smoking ban inside Atlantic City gaming facilities continues to generate discussion. The political landscape around how casinos are taxed also remains in flux, adding another layer of uncertainty to the business environment.

These factors have prompted Local 54 to take a cautious approach with contract durations this year, allowing both workers and management to reassess conditions annually as the competitive landscape evolves.
