Our community is mourning the loss of Bart DiGuglielmo, a 62-year-old Hammonton native and U.S. Army veteran who was fatally shot in a Florida Walmart parking lot on Tuesday, June 30, following what authorities describe as an argument over a parking space.
The shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. in North Lauderdale, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office. DiGuglielmo was shot once and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The woman who fired the shot, described as an adult wearing a white shirt, remained at the scene and told detectives she acted in self-defense. Investigators determined that DiGuglielmo and the woman had argued over a parking spot before she opened fire. The shooter has not been publicly identified, and no charges have been filed as of this writing.
Homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter. The Broward County State Attorney's Office will ultimately decide whether criminal charges are warranted against the woman.
A Life of Service
DiGuglielmo's life was marked by dedication to serving others. According to his Facebook page, he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army for more than 16 years, including during Operation Desert Storm. After his military service, he worked as a nurse for over three decades.
His sister described him as "a Christian man and a very good person" in comments to CBS News Miami. DiGuglielmo's daughter told WPLG Local 10 that her father had moved to Florida three years ago to be closer to her.
Those who knew DiGuglielmo through social media remember him as an avid supporter of Philadelphia sports teams and Ohio State. His Facebook posts reflected his enthusiasm for the Eagles, including a photo from January 2025 showing him wearing Kelly Green the day after the team's Wildcard round victory over the Packers.
The tragic loss of a man who dedicated his life to military service and healthcare has left family, friends, and our Hammonton community grappling with the senseless nature of his death. As the investigation continues, many are left wondering how a dispute over a parking space could escalate to such a devastating outcome.
