Jason Derulo Addresses Shark Tank Controversy

Pop singer Jason Derulo has responded to mounting criticism over the shark tank installed in his Tarzana, California, residence, stating that he is evaluating the situation while defending the current living conditions of the animals.

Speaking to TMZ on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in Los Angeles, Derulo maintained that the sharks now occupy more space than they had at the aquarium from which he purchased them. The controversial tank, which is circular and embedded in the floor of his living room, came to public attention after he showcased it to streamer N3ON during a visit to his home.

The installation has drawn sharp rebuke from animal welfare organizations. The International Fund for Animal Welfare issued a statement condemning the setup, with Christian Plowman, the organization's Program Manager of Wildlife Cybercrime, criticizing Derulo for setting a poor example. Plowman specifically addressed the practice of keeping sharks as pets for social media attention, characterizing it as inappropriate and harmful.

Despite his defense of the current arrangement, Derulo acknowledged the criticism and indicated he is considering his options. The singer told TMZ he is listening to the concerns raised and attempting to determine the most appropriate course of action moving forward. However, he did not commit to a specific resolution, leaving open the possibility that he might relocate the sharks to a different facility or maintain the current setup.

The controversy highlights ongoing debates about exotic animal ownership and the responsibilities of public figures who showcase such arrangements on social media platforms. Animal welfare experts have long argued that sharks require specialized environments with specific water conditions, adequate space, and professional care that residential settings typically cannot provide.

As the situation develops, attention remains focused on whether Derulo will relocate the animals to a facility better equipped to meet their long-term needs or continue to house them in his Tarzana residence. The singer has not announced a timeline for making a final decision regarding the sharks' future.
