A San Diego Comic-Con purchasing mishap that left actress Jennifer Tilly with an empty box instead of a collectible Chucky doll is headed toward resolution, with the vendor now preparing to ship a replacement.
Dan Willett, owner of Unbox Industries, confirmed Wednesday that his company will send out the replacement doll on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The mix-up occurred when a starstruck employee at the convention mistakenly handed Tilly a sample box rather than one containing the actual product.
Tilly, who stars in the "Chucky" horror franchise, had purchased the collectible for $175 in cash, intending to give it to franchise creator Don Mancini. The actress documented her discovery of the empty container in an Instagram video that quickly gained widespread attention online.
"Life isn't always peaches and cream. Sometimes life is a $175 empty box," Tilly said in the video, referring to the item she described as a "Chucky kitty cat weirdo thing."
According to Willett, speaking to TMZ, the small independent toy company faced overwhelming customer volume at San Diego Comic-Con when the error occurred. The situation came to light when a staff member noticed Tilly's social media post just as Willett prepared to return to the United Kingdom.
Unable to contact the actress directly, Unbox Industries issued an urgent appeal on social media asking for assistance in reaching her. The company posted on Twitter: "HELP! Is there anyone out there that can get a message to @jennifertilly? Ms Tilly purchased an @ishiguroayako x @universalpictures Childs Play Nyacky at SDCC and we accidentally gave her an empty box. We can't message her directly. Can anyone help?"
A customer eventually provided contact information for Tilly's manager, allowing the company to obtain a delivery address. Representatives for Tilly confirmed that Unbox Industries made contact and that the actress has been informed about the incoming replacement.
The incident highlights both the challenges small vendors face during major conventions and the power of social media in resolving customer service issues. What began as a disappointing purchase for the actress has transformed into a story with a positive resolution, demonstrating how viral attention can sometimes work in a consumer's favor.
