Actor Jim Carrey has expressed profound grief following the unexpected death of Chuck Russell, the director who helmed the 1994 film 'The Mask' and helped propel Carrey into the upper echelon of Hollywood stardom.
Russell died Wednesday at his San Diego-area home at age 74. Emergency crews responded to an unspecified medical emergency, according to TMZ.com.
In a statement to TMZ.com, Carrey described the lasting impact Russell had on his career and creative life. "I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who, during the shooting of 'The Mask,' created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set," Carrey told TMZ.com.
"The entire cast and crew were touched and inspired by his playfulness. Every one of us has been many years blessed by that buoyant and timeless moment. I consider 'The Mask' one of the jewels of my creative life. Thank you, Chuck," Carrey told TMZ.com.
The 1994 film represented a pivotal moment in Carrey's ascent to fame. 'The Mask' arrived as the second installment in a trio of blockbusters that defined Carrey's breakout period, sandwiched between 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' and 'Dumber & Dumber.'
Russell's contributions to 'The Mask' extended beyond traditional directing duties. He collaborated with George Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic to develop groundbreaking digital technologies that merged live-action performance with innovative visual effects concepts. The technical achievements earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects.
A University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign graduate, Russell built a distinguished career as a film director, screenwriter, and producer. He made his directorial debut with 1987's 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors' and followed with the cult horror film 'The Blob' in 1988, which he both wrote and directed.
His final project was a remake of the 1986 film 'Witchboard,' which he wrote and directed in 2024.
Russell is survived by his wife of 19 years, Ania; three children, Logan, Riley, and Carlyn; former wife Patti Rao; and sister Anne Jacob.
