Kate Middleton Opens Up About Cancer's Impact on Family

Kate Middleton offered a candid glimpse into how her cancer diagnosis affected her family during a recent hospital visit, acknowledging the profound emotional toll the ordeal took on Prince William and their three children.

In footage shared by Hello! magazine via Instagram on Thursday, June 4, the 44-year-old Princess of Wales visited a cancer patient nearing the end of treatment. During the conversation, Kate spoke openly about the challenges her family faced throughout her health journey.

"I know it's as hard for the family and loved ones," Kate said in the footage, according to Us Weekly. "I know how hard it was for the children and my parents."

Speaking to the cancer patient's partner, she added, "You go through it with them."

The comments represent a rare personal disclosure from the Princess of Wales, who has largely maintained privacy regarding her health struggles. Kate and Prince William have been married since 2011 and share three children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 7.

In 2024, Kate was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer, which forced her to pause her royal work commitments to undergo treatment, including a preventative form of chemotherapy. The diagnosis sent shockwaves through the royal family and prompted an outpouring of support from around the world.

Prince William, 43, has been vocal about his wife's strength throughout the ordeal. During a May 22 appearance on the United Kingdom's Heart Radio, William praised Kate's resilience. "She's an amazing mom, an amazing wife and, literally, our family couldn't cope without her," William said, according to Us Weekly. "She's been absolutely stunning, brilliant."

Last year, the Princess of Wales announced she was in remission, marking a significant milestone in her recovery. In a January 2025 statement, Kate expressed gratitude for the care she received at The Royal Marsden hospital.

"I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year," Kate wrote. "My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything."

She continued, "We couldn't have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional. It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery ... As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead."

Prince William has also spoken about how the couple's children processed their mother's diagnosis. During an October 2025 episode of Eugene Levy's The Reluctant Traveler series, William discussed the family's approach to helping the children cope.

"Everyone has their own coping mechanisms for these sorts of things, and children are constantly learning and adapting," William said, according to Us Weekly. "We try to make sure we give them the security and the safety that they need. We're a very open family, so we talk about things that bother us, and things that trouble us, but you never quite know the knock-on effects that it can have. It's just important to be there for each other and to kind of reassure the children that everything is OK."

The Princess of Wales's recent comments underscore a reality familiar to many families facing cancer: the diagnosis affects not only the patient but reverberates through the entire family unit. Her willingness to acknowledge this publicly may provide comfort to others navigating similar challenges.

As Kate continues her recovery and gradually returns to public duties, her openness about the family's experience offers insight into the personal struggles behind the public facade of royal life.
