A search that began more than five weeks ago has come to a tragic conclusion. The body of a 20-year-old man who went missing while swimming in Ocean City has been recovered in Sea Isle City, bringing closure to a case that has weighed heavily on our shore communities.
Ocean City Police announced Tuesday that the young man's body was found near 72nd Street in Sea Isle City on June 19. The college student had disappeared on May 18 while boogie boarding with a group near 10th Street by the Ocean City boardwalk.
The incident occurred when the swimmer, who was home from college at the time, went under the water approximately 200 feet from shore. The U.S. Coast Guard immediately launched a search operation, working alongside local authorities to locate the missing man.
Within days of his disappearance, police transitioned their efforts from an active search to a recovery mission, acknowledging the grim reality facing the young man's family and friends. The recovery more than a month later, several miles down the coast in Sea Isle City, underscores the unpredictable nature of ocean currents along our shoreline.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a sobering reminder of the ocean's power and the critical importance of water safety. Officials have repeatedly emphasized that swimmers should only enter the water when lifeguards are on duty—a message that becomes even more urgent as we move deeper into the summer season.
Our thoughts remain with the young man's family during this difficult time as they process this devastating loss. The tragedy reminds all of us who call the shore home, or who visit our beaches, that respecting the ocean and following safety guidelines can mean the difference between a day of fun and an unthinkable tragedy.
