New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered a carefully evasive response when pressed about widespread speculation that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce will exchange vows at Madison Square Garden next week, neither confirming nor denying the rumors that have captivated the city.
During an interview with ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl for ABC's This Week, Mamdani, 34, employed diplomatic language when questioned about the alleged July 3 ceremony. A preview clip shared on Saturday, June 27, captured the mayor's artful dodge.
"You know, what I am here to say is that whoever is getting married in New York City, I think it's hard to beat the City Clerk's Office but many will try and soon there will be more news," Mamdani told ABC News.
When Karl pressed further, asking directly whether somebody famous would be getting married at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, July 3, the mayor deflected entirely. "Are you hearing that?" Mamdani replied. "I think they're calling me now."
The speculation surrounding Swift, 36, and Kelce, also 36, has intensified since their engagement in August 2025. Recent developments have added credibility to the Madison Square Garden theory, including a permit filed with New York City to close streets around the venue from Wednesday, July 2, to midday Saturday, July 4, for an event on July 3, according to The New York Times.
A source told Us Weekly on Saturday that even wedding guests remain uncertain about the precise location. "Taylor and Travis told guests to be in NYC," the insider explained to the publication. "No other location was provided." Invitees have been instructed to be available in New York City on Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3, but have received no further details.
"They're putting their guests on hold for a couple days," the source added, speaking to Us Weekly. "They are spending a lot of money — in the millions."
A separate source confirmed to Us Weekly that the nuptials will indeed occur inside Madison Square Garden, marking a significant shift from the couple's original plans.
According to insiders who spoke with the publication, Swift and Kelce initially envisioned a Rhode Island wedding. "Taylor and Travis really wanted their wedding in Rhode Island, and June 13 was the date, but security wouldn't have worked because it could get out of hand with that kind of scale of an event," a source revealed to Us Weekly on Saturday. "Ocean House [in Westerly] was planned at one point, and then plans changed to New York."
The security challenges proved insurmountable for the Rhode Island location. "Rhode Island wasn't great because the nature of the access and the perimeters were too difficult to secure," the source told the publication. "So the main issue with Rhode Island ended up being security."
The NYPD has reportedly been briefed about potential crowd management issues surrounding the rumored event, underscoring the logistical complexity of hosting what would be one of the most high-profile celebrity weddings in recent memory.
