New York City is implementing thousands of transit system upgrades and adjustments to manage the massive crowds expected for FIFA World Cup matches and a potential overlap with NBA championship games, officials announced Thursday.
The preparations come as the region braces for an unprecedented convergence of major sporting events. The New York Knicks will host the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8 and June 10, with a possible additional game on June 16. Meanwhile, the first of eight World Cup matches at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is scheduled for June 13, when Brazil faces Morocco.
"It's not just the Knicks, it's the Knicks-plus, what a year," said New York Governor Kathy Hochul at a press conference Thursday, according to NPR. "We can handle this, we got this, this is what we do best."
Governor Hochul encouraged tourists to visit the city despite concerns about congestion from the high-profile events. She and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani outlined a comprehensive strategy developed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority to accommodate up to 100,000 extra mass transit riders on game days.
"We [normally] handle 6 million riders a day, so this is something within our control," Hochul told NPR.
The extensive list of modifications includes expanded bus and subway service on game and match days. Transportation officials will implement lane closures designed to create dedicated travel corridors for buses and emergency vehicles. Construction and delivery bans will be enforced in certain areas to maintain traffic flow throughout the city.
Mayor Mamdani acknowledged that increased road congestion on game days remains unavoidable despite the preparations. "I want to encourage New Yorkers traveling into Midtown [Manhattan] to park their cars at home. Ride a bike, take the subway, or walk," he said, speaking to NPR.
Officials expressed confidence in their ability to manage a potential scheduling conflict on June 16, when an NBA Finals game in Manhattan could coincide with the World Cup match between France and Senegal at the New Jersey stadium.
"This is a moment we've been preparing for, we've been hoping for and we feel fully prepared for," Mamdani told NPR. "We know how to put on big events."
Beyond transportation logistics, state and local officials detailed enhanced security measures designed to mitigate risks of crime and terrorism during the events. Governor Hochul noted that while visible police presence will increase, extensive behind-the-scenes work is underway.
"You'll see more of a police presence, but know that behind the scenes our cyber-analysts and experts are focused on this with every fiber of their being," Hochul said, according to NPR, noting that crime on the city's subway system is at a 16-year low.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, with the championship match scheduled at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19. The tournament represents a significant test of the region's infrastructure and emergency preparedness capabilities as it welcomes an international audience to one of the world's most complex transit systems.
