Ocean Casino Resort suspended all gambling operations Monday after an early morning fire triggered a cascade of damage throughout the Atlantic City property.
Atlantic City Fire Department crews arrived at the casino around 5:30 a.m. to battle a blaze that broke out in a linen room, according to a department statement. While firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, a pipe burst and unleashed water that spread to multiple areas of the building.
The flooding proved extensive enough to cause part of the lobby ceiling to collapse. Water also damaged hallways and elevator systems throughout the resort. Fortunately, the fire department confirmed no one sustained injuries during the incident.
The water intrusion compromised the building's gaming support systems, a spokesperson for Ocean Casino Resort explained in an email. As a result, the resort made the decision to shut down all gaming activities for Monday, including slots, table games and sports betting.
A slot tournament that had been scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday was canceled due to the disruption.
Despite the gaming floor closure, guests can still access other parts of the property. The hotel, restaurants, pools and additional amenities continue normal operations, the spokesperson said. In a creative workaround, Avila Lounge temporarily relocated to TopGolf for the day, the resort announced on social media.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze. The resort has not announced when gaming operations will resume.
