Opera Singer Jubilant Sykes Suffered 78 Stab Wounds in Fatal Attack

Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner documents have disclosed disturbing details about the death of Grammy-nominated opera singer Jubilant Sykes, who was killed in his Los Angeles home on December 8, 2025. The autopsy report, obtained by Us Weekly on Tuesday, July 21, confirms that the 71-year-old baritone suffered 78 stab wounds in what officials have ruled a homicide.

The medical examiner's findings paint a harrowing picture of the attack. According to the documents, at least 73 total wounds were identified on Sykes' body, with 68 classified as sharp force injuries and five as blunt force trauma. The weapons recovered at the scene included a curved knife with a blade measuring approximately nine inches long and two inches wide, along with a 10-pound dumbbell bearing apparent bloodstains.

Cecelia Sykes, the victim's wife, contacted the Santa Monica Police Department and reported that her son, who has a documented history of mental illness, had killed her husband. The autopsy report provides her account of the incident, stating that she was in the shower when she heard her husband call out for her to dial 9-1-1.

"When she came out of the shower, she saw their adult son standing over [Jubilant] stabbing him with an apparent artifactual sharp edge weapon," the report stated. Emergency responders pronounced Jubilant Sykes dead at the scene. A toxicology examination found no illicit drugs or prescribed medications in his system.

Authorities arrested Micah Sykes, 32, on suspicion of causing his father's death. Santa Monica police Lt. Lewis Gilmour confirmed to KABC that investigators had learned of Micah Sykes' mental illness history. "However, at this point, it's unclear what circumstances led up [to the incident, and] if there was any altercation or argument," Gilmour told KABC. "We're investigating that angle right now."

Neighbors told KTLA that Micah Sykes had experienced mental health challenges and periods of homelessness prior to the incident. Court proceedings have been delayed, with local news outlets reporting that his arraignment, originally scheduled for June 4, has been postponed to Thursday, August 6.

USA Today reported in December 2025 that Micah Sykes was being held without bail after Los Angeles County prosecutors successfully requested a change from the initial four million dollar bail amount. According to ABC7, Deputy District Attorney Cesar Rodriguez informed a judge that Micah Sykes was not being appropriately medicated for a schizophrenia diagnosis.

Jubilant Sykes built an acclaimed career as a baritone, performing at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, and the Barbican Center in London. His contributions to opera earned him a Grammy nomination during his distinguished career.
