Patrick Dempsey has definitively ended speculation about a potential Senate campaign, announcing Wednesday that he will not seek to replace Graham Platner as the Democratic nominee for Maine's U.S. Senate seat.
The former "Grey's Anatomy" star addressed the political speculation in a lengthy open letter titled "Why I'm not running for US Senate," published in the Portland Press Herald on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. In the letter, Dempsey revealed that he gave the possibility serious consideration before ultimately deciding his future does not lie in Washington.
According to TMZ.com, Dempsey acknowledged he gave the idea "real thought" and engaged in significant soul-searching about whether he could make a meaningful difference in Congress. After careful deliberation, however, he concluded the answer was no.
The actor's name emerged in political conversations following the implosion of Graham Platner's Senate campaign. Platner, who had been the Democratic nominee, faced multiple serious allegations that ultimately derailed his candidacy. One former girlfriend accused him of sexual assault, while another alleged he secretly removed condoms during sex without her consent. Platner has denied both allegations.
Platner officially suspended his campaign on Wednesday night, the same day Dempsey published his letter declining to run. Maine Democratic Party leaders now face a deadline of July 27, 2026, to select a replacement candidate for the November ballot.
