Tourists exploring Beatles landmarks in Liverpool experienced a once-in-a-lifetime moment when one of the legendary band members himself appeared alongside their tour bus, creating a scene that blended nostalgia with modern technology.
Paul McCartney flagged down the Magical Mystery Tour bus as it traveled through the English city where the Fab Four grew up, offering passengers an impromptu greeting that tour guide Tony Curley described as extraordinary.
The encounter unfolded as the tour bus approached a red light on Hope Street near the Cathedral. Driver Neil noticed someone attempting to get their attention, and the vehicle pulled up to discover McCartney waving from the back seat of a car.
"We pulled our window down and... he said to us, 'You alright, lads?'," Curley, 71, told SWNS news agency. "Of course we were! As a Beatles fan seeing Paul for the first time was amazing."
The moment escalated when McCartney held up his phone to reveal drummer Ringo Starr on a video call, allowing both surviving Beatles to acknowledge the delighted passengers. Curley immediately alerted everyone aboard to capture the experience.
"I got on the microphone and said to all the fans on the bus: 'Get your phones out; there is Paul McCartney'," Curley recounted to SWNS. "He then waved at everyone on the bus and pulled out Ringo on his phone. It probably only lasted a minute, but (it) was a magical coincidence."
Such sightings remain exceptionally rare. According to Curley, who has conducted Beatles Bus tours for the past 10 years, McCartney had been spotted by their tours only once before—in 2018, when he was filming a segment with James Corden outside his childhood home for the Late Late Show.
The tour guide believes the musician deliberately chose to greet the bus after spotting it approaching. "He must have been there in the car—on the phone to Ringo—and seen us coming along, and decided to say hello... I'm sure he would have had a giggle over it," Curley told SWNS.
Curley suggested McCartney likely takes satisfaction in witnessing the enduring global appeal of the Beatles legacy. The Magical Mystery Tour attracts visitors from around the world who travel to Liverpool specifically to trace the band's origins and history.
"I also think he must get a huge sense of pride, when seeing the bus. People travel from all over the world to come on our tours," Curley said to SWNS. "It was just perfect timing that we had to be there at that exact moment."
The fortunate timing extended to Curley himself, who had only agreed to work the Saturday shift after a colleague called in sick. The passengers aboard were described as being over the moon about the unexpected celebrity encounter.
"It will be a couple of weeks until we come back down to earth," Curley told SWNS, capturing the lingering excitement from a brief interaction that transformed an ordinary tour into an unforgettable experience for dozens of Beatles enthusiasts.
