Former professional basketball player Paul Pierce has filed court documents opposing a request from his ex-partner Princess Santiago for $30,000 per month in child support, along with an additional $100,000 to cover legal fees associated with the case.
Pierce's legal response centers on his changing financial circumstances. The retired athlete has not competed in the NBA since 2017, and his income has declined substantially from his playing days when he accumulated career earnings exceeding $200 million.
According to court filings obtained by TMZ, Pierce's employment with Fox Sports 1 concluded in 2021, though he continues to receive payments from the network. Those payments are scheduled to end in September 2026, at which point his income will be reduced by nearly one-half. Pierce reported earning $1.5 million in 2025.
The former athlete detailed substantial ongoing financial commitments in his filing. Pierce currently supports four other children and pays $20,000 monthly in spousal support alongside $24,000 per month in child support obligations.
Pierce stated in his paperwork that he has voluntarily been paying $5,000 monthly in support for the couple's newborn son, King Pierce. He expressed willingness to continue providing financial assistance for the child.
The custody arrangement remains a point of contention between the parties. Pierce requested joint legal and physical custody of King Pierce, while Santiago has asked the court for sole custody.
In his court submission, Pierce challenged Santiago's claims about limited financial resources. He noted that Santiago earns over $400,000 annually, contradicting her assertions of financial need.
Pierce also addressed communication issues in the filing, stating that Santiago frequently sends him lengthy text messages about subjects unrelated to their child. He further alleged that she has harassed his girlfriend.
The retired player disputed Santiago's characterizations of his personal life and alcohol consumption. Pierce described his lifestyle as quiet and stable, denying claims of excessive drinking.
The case highlights the financial complexities facing retired professional athletes as their income streams shift from active competition to post-career opportunities.
