Pedestrian Struck by Police Cruiser on Black Horse Pike

A 58-year-old Pleasantville resident is recovering from injuries sustained when a marked Egg Harbor Township police patrol vehicle struck him during the early morning hours of Wednesday.

Alvin Powers was crossing the Black Horse Pike near Old Egg Harbor Road shortly after midnight when the collision occurred. Officer William Danz, who was on duty and traveling eastbound, struck Powers near the intersection around 12:07 a.m., according to local police.

The officer immediately pulled over and provided assistance until paramedics arrived on scene. Powers was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators determined that Powers was not using a marked crosswalk at the time of the incident, even though one was available in the vicinity. Authorities noted that conditions were challenging at the time—heavy rain was falling, the area had poor lighting, and Powers was dressed in dark clothing that would have made him difficult to see.

The Egg Harbor Township Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Sgt. Edward Stearns and Officer Kevin Brady are leading the inquiry.

In response to the incident, Chief Fred Spano issued safety guidance for pedestrians in our community. He emphasized the importance of remaining alert while crossing streets, avoiding distractions, and making eye contact with drivers before stepping into traffic. The chief also urged residents to wear bright or reflective clothing when walking at night, carry a flashlight for visibility, and always use designated crosswalks when available.
