Searcher Details Discovery of Nolan Wells' Body Near Horn Island

The search-and-rescue professional who helped locate Nolan Wells from the air has provided new insight into the 18-year-old's death, suggesting dangerous water conditions may explain how the young man's body ended up near his last known location along Horn Island.

Brian Trascher, vice president of the United Cajun Navy, participated in the search operation that ultimately located Wells' body on July 6. Speaking about the discovery, Trascher explained that deteriorating weather forced his team to shift from ground-based efforts to aerial surveillance on the second day of the search.

After approximately two hours of flying over the search area, Trascher and his pilot observed multiple law enforcement vessels gathering at the northwest tip of Horn Island. Moving closer to investigate, they spotted a body floating face down in shallow water near the shoreline.

From an altitude of roughly 400 feet, Trascher could not discern facial features or identify any visible injuries. However, the body matched the description of the missing teenager and was located in close proximity to where Wells had last been seen alive.

Trascher, who emphasized his expertise lies in search-and-rescue operations rather than criminal investigation, offered a potential explanation for the circumstances. He theorized that a rip current may have initially pulled Wells away from shore before a shift in tidal patterns brought his body back toward the beach.

The searcher noted that the most striking aspect of the recovery was the short distance between where Wells was found and his last confirmed sighting. This proximity has become a focal point in understanding the sequence of events that led to the teenager's death.

Wells was laid to rest on Monday, July 20, 2026, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Rev. Al Sharpton officiated the funeral service for the young man whose death has drawn significant attention and raised questions within the community.

The Wells family has expressed skepticism about the drowning theory, pointing to Nolan's swimming abilities as evidence that contradicts the official explanation. Their concerns have prompted calls for a more thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

During the funeral service, Sharpton announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with Wells' death. Entertainment mogul Tyler Perry subsequently pledged to match that amount, bringing the total potential reward to $100,000.

Law enforcement authorities have maintained their position that Wells likely drowned and have stated they have not uncovered evidence suggesting criminal activity. Despite this official stance, the family continues to seek additional answers about what happened to their son during his final moments.

The case highlights the dangers posed by coastal water conditions, particularly rip currents, which can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers. These powerful channels of water moving away from shore are responsible for numerous drownings each year along Gulf Coast beaches.
