The rapid emergence of artificial intelligence has ignited passionate debates among educators, policymakers, and technology experts. Yet the generation most likely to be shaped by this technology — today's teenagers — holds remarkably diverse perspectives on its promise and peril.

A recent survey of seven teenagers from across the United States reveals a generation grappling with fundamental questions about learning, autonomy, and economic security in an AI-driven world. Their responses range from enthusiastic embrace to outright rejection, reflecting broader societal tensions about the technology's proper role.

For Charles Ansevin, a 15-year-old from Gates Mills, Ohio, the AI chatbot ChatGPT has become something approaching a companion. "We've been able to have very meaningful, you know, intelligent discussions," Ansevin told NPR. His perspective represents one end of the spectrum — viewing AI as a conversational partner capable of substantive intellectual engagement.

Standing in stark opposition is Dorian Prado, 16, of Fort Worth, Texas, who describes himself as "very against AI." His concern centers on cognitive development and the fundamental processes of learning. "It makes it to where thinking is optional, and that should never be the case," Prado told NPR. "You don't think, you don't learn. It's making us dumber."

The educational applications of AI generated particular interest among the students interviewed. Tessa Klein, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate from Oradell, New Jersey, has integrated AI tools into her academic work with positive results. The technology has provided feedback on her essays and helped clarify challenging scientific concepts.

"I think it's just this opportunity to have sort of like a private tutor that maybe other students cannot have or cannot afford," Klein told NPR. Her observation highlights a potential democratizing effect of AI — providing personalized educational support to students who might otherwise lack access to such resources.

Yet the conversation extends well beyond classroom applications. Dammie'on McColley, an 18-year-old from Indianapolis, expressed concerns about AI's broader economic implications and its potential to disrupt labor markets. His worry centers on working families whose livelihoods could be threatened by automation.

"I don't want it to, you know, kind of throw off jobs and things like that. That's [people's] only way of bringing in income to feed their families. And if we have a machinery that's taking over that, then what are they going to do?" McColley told NPR.

The survey also included perspectives from Ethan Ansevin of Gates Mills, Rida Desai of River Edge, New Jersey, and Natalie Vadakkan of Oradell, New Jersey, though their specific views were not detailed in the reporting.

These teenage voices illuminate the complex terrain that educators and policymakers must navigate as AI becomes increasingly embedded in academic and professional environments. The students' concerns mirror adult debates but carry additional weight — this generation will inherit whatever framework society establishes for AI governance and integration.

The tension between AI as educational equalizer and AI as cognitive crutch represents perhaps the central challenge facing schools today. While Klein sees expanded access to personalized learning, Prado warns of atrophied critical thinking skills. Both perspectives contain validity, suggesting that thoughtful implementation — rather than blanket acceptance or rejection — may prove essential.

McColley's economic concerns add another dimension to the discussion, reminding stakeholders that AI's impact extends far beyond academic settings into the fundamental structures of work and family security. His question — what happens to workers displaced by automation — remains one that policymakers have yet to adequately address.

As artificial intelligence continues its rapid evolution, the perspectives of young people who are simultaneously learning with and about this technology will prove increasingly important. Their experiences in classrooms today will shape how the next generation approaches AI integration across all sectors of society tomorrow.
