Sheriff Addresses Anonymous Tip in Nancy Guthrie Case

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos issued a statement Thursday addressing reports of an anonymous tip related to the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie.

"We are aware of reports regarding an anonymous tip related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation that was provided to a group in Mexico," Nanos said in a statement on Thursday, June 11. "At this time, we have not been contacted by Mexican authorities."

The 70-year-old sheriff emphasized that the investigation remains active. "This investigation remains active and ongoing, and we will continue to follow up on any credible information," his statement concluded.

According to TMZ, a volunteer search organization called Buscando Corazones Nogales received an anonymous tip that directed them to the U.S.-Mexico border region. The group, working alongside the Sonora State Commission for the Search of Missing Persons, reportedly searched a remote area on Wednesday, June 10, where they allegedly discovered 25 unmarked graves. The outlet reported no sign of Guthrie was found during the search.

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home just outside Tucson, Arizona, in the early hours of February 1, 2026. More than four months later, she has yet to be located, and local authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in the case.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim's family. The Guthrie family offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy's return in February, supplementing a $202,500 reward posted by the FBI. The substantial financial incentive underscores the family's desperation for answers and the community's investment in resolving the case.

Last month, Sheriff Nanos acknowledged he was not "personally" in contact with the Guthrie family regarding case updates. "If [my team] need the family for anything, they get in touch with them and the family," he told People on May 14. "It works both ways."

During a June 1 interview with KOLD News 13, a local Tucson outlet, Nanos provided insight into the challenges facing investigators. "These cases are difficult," he clarified. "Not just this case. A number of our cases come to us where it requires a lot of work from other people. It's not just a detective who goes out there, talks to somebody, and we can make an arrest."

The sheriff characterized Nancy's disappearance as particularly "sensitive" due to the limited DNA evidence recovered thus far. "What really makes it prolonged is we do rely on labs," he added. "You don't want to jeopardize not just the integrity of this case, but the integrity of DNA as a supplement to law enforcement work."

The reliance on laboratory analysis and forensic testing has contributed to the extended timeline of the investigation, as authorities work to ensure any evidence collected meets the rigorous standards required for potential prosecution.

Savannah Guthrie, 54, returned to her position at NBC's Today show in New York City on April 6 after taking time away following her mother's disappearance. Earlier this week, on Sunday, June 7, the television host shared an emotional message on social media appealing for her mother's safe return. "Oh my, my soul, it cries out, soul, it cries out," Savannah wrote via her Instagram Story. "Bring her home."

The development involving the anonymous tip and subsequent search in Mexico represents a new dimension to an investigation that has stretched across international borders. While the discovery of unmarked graves near the border raises troubling questions, authorities have not confirmed any connection to the Guthrie case. The lack of communication between Mexican authorities and the Pima County Sheriff's Department suggests coordination challenges that may complicate the investigation moving forward.
