As temperatures soared across the region Thursday, our neighbors found the perfect escape just a short drive away — the Jersey Shore delivered exactly what heat-weary residents needed.

Ocean City's beaches and boardwalk were packed Thursday evening as visitors discovered what locals already know: when the mercury rises inland, the shore offers a natural air-conditioned refuge. Many reported temperatures running 15-20 degrees cooler than back home, transforming what could have been a miserable evening into a pleasant coastal retreat.

Deb Blevins traveled all the way from Greensboro, North Carolina, specifically seeking relief from the heat. "We said, what can we do to cool off? And heard it was 15-20 degrees cooler down the shore. Here we are! The water is crisp, like an ice-cold plunge," she said.

Rose and Jim Merritt arrived Thursday and were pleasantly surprised by the conditions. "It's so much cooler on the boardwalk," Rose Merritt noted. "We thought we would be dying up here." The couple is looking forward to spending the holiday weekend with family, with Jim adding they're "hopefully, watch the fireworks."

The timing couldn't be better for the Fourth of July weekend. While forecasters predict continued hot and humid conditions through the holiday, beachgoers say they're not letting the weather dampen their celebration plans. Grace Bareford summed up the prevailing attitude: "We will have to see how it goes. Getting another umbrella."
