A Vietnam War veteran who sacrificed his beloved muscle car to raise six sons received an extraordinary Father's Day gift when his youngest child tracked down and restored the exact model he had given up decades earlier.
Daniel Allen had owned a white 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with a black hood and red stripes—a four-speed manual transmission vehicle that became central to some of his most cherished memories. He took his future wife Diana on their first date in the car and even drove it aboard a ferry where he proposed to her. However, as their family expanded from one child to six sons, Daniel made the difficult decision to trade the Mach 1 for something more practical.
His youngest son, Shane Allen, grew up hearing stories about the legendary Mustang. The two bonded over their shared passion for classic automobiles, making it routine to attend Father's Day car shows together where they would admire Mustangs and discuss the one that got away.
"I knew the car he had dreamed about was that 1969 Mach 1," Shane told PEOPLE. "My dad and I have talked about this car since I was a kid."
Earlier this year, Shane discovered a white 1969 Mach 1 matching his father's descriptions. Recognizing an opportunity to fulfill his father's long-held dream, Shane made a significant sacrifice of his own—trading away his personally restored Mustang GT to acquire the vehicle.
The restoration project required substantial work. Shane oversaw changes to the upholstery and arranged for the paint to be refinished, preparing the vehicle for what would become an unforgettable Father's Day surprise.
During their traditional Father's Day car show visit, Daniel noticed a white Mach 1 in the parking lot. A name tag hanging from the rearview mirror read "Daniel," which he initially dismissed as coincidence. When he jokingly asked where his keys were, Shane handed them over and instructed him to start the engine.
