A Salt Lake City family is celebrating a remarkable recovery after a 2-year-old girl donated bone marrow to save her 5-year-old sister's life. The transplant, performed in February, has proven successful in treating a rare and potentially fatal blood disorder.
Emma Meline's medical crisis began just four days before Christmas 2025, when her mother Amanda Meline and then-husband Jacob noticed alarming symptoms on the child's leg. What appeared as a rash and swelling prompted an immediate visit to their pediatrician, who ordered laboratory tests to determine the cause.
The diagnosis revealed aplastic anemia, an extremely rare condition in which bone marrow tissue stops producing blood cells. While the pediatrician initially delivered relief that Emma did not have leukemia, the reality of her condition presented its own grave challenges. The disease varies in severity and can prove fatal without intervention.
Medical professionals determined that Emma required a bone marrow transplant rather than medication-based treatment. Testing revealed that Lucy, one of Emma's twin younger sisters, was a perfect genetic match whose marrow could be transplanted without risk of rejection.
The two-month period before the scheduled operation proved difficult for the family. Amanda Meline and Emma spent nearly all their time at the hospital together, as the frightened child could not bear to be alone. Lucy also underwent multiple rounds of blood work in preparation for the procedure.
"[Lucy's] favorite thing to say was, 'I'm being brave for Emma,' if she had to get blood work done," Amanda Meline told Good News Network. "And it was so tender."
Before the February 17 transplant could proceed, Emma underwent targeted chemotherapy to eliminate her existing bone marrow tissue and prepare her body to accept the new marrow. The procedure succeeded, and mother and daughter returned home on March 11 to begin the recovery process.
Emma now requires special sanitary precautions due to her compromised immune system. However, medical professionals have declared the transplant a complete success, with no recurrence of aplastic anemia detected 100 days following the operation.
The experience has transformed the relationship between the two sisters. Emma has developed a profound appreciation for what her younger sibling did for her, creating an extraordinary bond between them.
"She's realizing that Lucy saved her life and they have that bond," Amanda Meline told Good News Network. "That's so incredible."
The ordeal has forced Emma to mature beyond her years, according to her mother. "Honestly, it's really crazy to see Emma's mental fortitude," Amanda Meline told Good News Network.
Aplastic anemia can develop at any age and may result from external factors or manifest as an autoimmune disorder. Treatment options depend on the severity of the condition, ranging from medication to bone marrow transplantation in the most serious cases.
