LINDENWOLD — A person was struck and killed by an NJ Transit train traveling from Atlantic City to Philadelphia on Tuesday, temporarily shutting down a portion of the Atlantic City Rail Line and forcing the cancellation of multiple trains.
NJ Transit said Atlantic City Line train No. 4620 struck and fatally injured the person at approximately 11:07 a.m. near the Pinelawn Avenue crossing in Lindenwold.
The train had departed Atlantic City at 10:12 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Philadelphia's 30th Street Station at 11:52 a.m.
Approximately 120 passengers were aboard the train, according to NJ Transit. No passengers or crew members were reported injured.
The identity of the person who was killed had not been publicly released as of Tuesday evening.
NJ Transit described the incident in its service alerts as a “trespasser fatality.” Authorities have not publicly released additional details explaining how or why the person came to be on the tracks.
NJ Transit Police are leading the investigation.
Atlantic City Rail Service Disrupted
The fatality caused significant disruptions for travelers along the Atlantic City Rail Line.
Service was suspended in both directions between Atco and Cherry Hill while police investigated the incident near Lindenwold. NJ Transit provided substitute bus service between the two stations and cross-honored rail tickets and passes on NJ Transit buses and PATCO.
Train No. 4620, which was involved in the incident, was terminated at Lindenwold rather than continuing to Philadelphia.
At least two other Atlantic City Line trains were canceled during the disruption. Train No. 4623, which had been scheduled to arrive in Atlantic City at 12:41 p.m., was canceled at Cherry Hill. Train No. 4624, the 12:04 p.m. departure from Atlantic City to Philadelphia, was also canceled. Substitute bus service was provided.
Service Has Resumed
NJ Transit subsequently announced that Atlantic City Rail Line service had resumed in both directions between Atco and Cherry Hill following the police investigation.
The Atlantic City Rail Line connects Philadelphia with South Jersey communities including Cherry Hill, Lindenwold, Atco, Hammonton, Egg Harbor City, Absecon and Atlantic City.
The investigation into Tuesday's fatal incident remains ongoing.
