A Navy veteran working at John Wayne Airport despite severe mobility issues has received more than $174,000 after a passenger's viral video brought his situation to light, enabling him to finally retire after years of physical struggle.
LaCinda Thackery was departing Los Angeles when she noticed an airport worker limping across the tarmac toward her aircraft. The sight of the man barely able to walk while performing his duties moved her to record footage and share it on TikTok, asking viewers if anyone could identify him.
The worker turned out to be James Blair, a 64-year-old veteran who served in the Navy from 1980 to 1990. After his military service, Blair worked as a fuel mechanic and has been employed at John Wayne Airport since 2006, despite suffering from a pair of deteriorated knees that make walking extremely difficult.
Blair's situation proved more complicated than simply needing to retire. Though approaching the age for social security eligibility and presumably entitled to a military pension, he continued working because his income supports his elderly mother's hospice care.
As Thackery's video circulated widely, comments flooded in from viewers asking how they could assist. Eventually, someone identified Blair by name, allowing Thackery to contact him through his supervisor at the airport. Blair himself had neither a smartphone nor social media accounts.
Blair's boss drove approximately 90 minutes to his residence to help establish a GoFundMe campaign that Thackery could promote to her millions of viewers. The response proved overwhelming. More than 6,000 donors contributed to the sole beneficiary fund, raising $180,000 at the time of reporting.
"I was speechless because I felt like the world showed up," Thackery told KSL News, "and I think in these times we need people like that."
For Blair, the experience has been transformative on multiple levels. The veteran expressed that the generosity from strangers has fundamentally altered his spiritual outlook.
"I believed in God, but I didn't really believe in God. But now, with the angel sitting next to you, it's amazing," Blair told Thackery, as reported by KSL. "I have a hard time working to pay bills, so other people probably have the same problems. When they're giving money they really can't spare, that amazes me. I'm just blown away."
The two eventually met in person, where Thackery presented Blair with a check for $174,000. Blair responded by sending her flowers addressed to "The Angel," a nickname that has remained with Thackery since the encounter.
While Blair has not yet officially retired, he has begun using the funds to improve his quality of life, including purchasing a new bed. The campaign demonstrates how social media can mobilize support for individuals facing difficult circumstances, particularly veterans who have served their country but continue to struggle in civilian life.
