A confrontation at Wrigley Field that has drawn widespread attention on social media remains under informal observation by Chicago Police, though the incident has not yet prompted an official investigation.
Chicago Police confirmed to TMZ.com they are aware of a viral video depicting an older Cubs fan slapping a younger spectator on the back of the head during the national anthem. However, no police report has been filed regarding the altercation.
The video, which circulated widely following Sunday's Cubs-Twins game, captures an older man wearing Cubs gear shouting at a younger fan seated directly in front of him. The older spectator was demanding the younger man stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner."
When the seated fan did not comply, the older man reached forward and struck him on the back of the head. The physical contact immediately drew reactions from surrounding spectators, with at least one person visible in the footage appearing to object to the action.
The younger fan subsequently stood for the remainder of the anthem following the strike.
Whether the matter advances to a formal investigation depends entirely on whether either party or a witness chooses to file an official police report. Without such a report, authorities have no basis to pursue the case further.
