Officials at Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed Sunday that the tiger involved in a fatal attack at the Doncaster, England, attraction will not be put down. The animal, an endangered Amur tiger named Altai, is "safe and well," according to the park, which stated the decision publicly as concern for the animal's future spread online.
The park indicated it had been flooded with messages from members of the public worried about what would happen to Altai. The announcement, reported by TMZ.com, came one day after a man entered the tiger's enclosure on Saturday afternoon and was attacked.
South Yorkshire Police stated that the tiger inflicted serious injuries on the man. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead there. His family has been notified and is being assisted by specialist officers, according to the park.
Altai, a 5-year-old Amur tiger, came to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in February 2025 from a zoo in Norway, a journey of more than 1,100 miles. Keepers at the park marked his fifth birthday with a post on Instagram. The park had previously characterized the tiger as calm and inquisitive and noted that he was acquired as part of an international breeding effort focused on conserving the endangered species.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park remained closed on Sunday as staff coped with the consequences of the incident. The park has not announced when it will reopen.
