A family clearing out their late mother's belongings in Cornwall discovered a treasure that would soon captivate collectors across three continents. The vintage wristwatch, tucked away in a jewelry box for decades, commanded £59,000—approximately $80,000—when the gavel fell at Hansons Cornwall auction house in Penzance on Tuesday.
The 1930s Patek Philippe & Co Calatrava Reference 448 had been valued at a modest £5,000 before the sale. The final price represented nearly 12 times that estimate, stunning both the auctioneers and the family members who attended the event.
The seller's daughter recalled her mother mentioning ownership of an expensive watch, but no one anticipated the stainless steel timepiece would generate such extraordinary interest. The watch had belonged to the seller's grandfather, a gift from his wife who reportedly appreciated designer clothing and luxury goods.
"When I finally had the watch in my hands and was able to examine it properly, I knew we had something extremely rare," Darren Ashley, senior valuer at Hansons Cornwall, told Good News Network. The timepiece's exceptional condition added to its appeal—after approximately 90 years, it remained in working order.
Ashley explained that Patek Philippe manufactured very few stainless steel watches during that era, making surviving examples highly coveted among collectors. The combination of scarcity and what he described as "mechanical perfection" drove intense pre-sale interest from serious collectors worldwide.
"The pre-sale interest was phenomenal, from serious collectors across the world, but nothing quite prepares you for watching that level of bidding unfold in the room," Ashley told Good News Network. Three family members attended the auction in person while others followed the proceedings remotely from their workplaces.
The final moments of the auction featured competing bids from collectors in Japan and China. Ashley characterized the conclusion as a fantastic moment for the family, noting that such results exemplify the excitement inherent in the auction business.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, emphasized the importance of examining household items carefully. "Never overlook what is tucked away at home," he told Good News Network.
He noted that the watch had passed quietly through generations of the Cornish family, with the late owner aware of its value but perhaps never imagining the level of international demand it would attract. The convergence of rarity, quality, and provenance created what Hanson described as spectacular results.
The timepiece will now travel thousands of miles to begin its next chapter in Hong Kong, where the winning bidder resides. The sale demonstrates how items of extraordinary value can remain undiscovered in ordinary homes, waiting for the right moment to reveal their true worth to the world.
