The owner of the New York Jets has ventured into international motorsports with a significant investment in Formula One racing.
Woody Johnson, who serves as chairman of the Jets, announced Thursday that he has purchased a minority stake in the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One racing team. The acquisition includes a position on the company's board of directors, where Johnson will hold the title of vice chairman.
The move represents a diversification of Johnson's sports business interests beyond the National Football League. Johnson has owned the Jets since 2000, guiding the franchise through more than two decades of competition in professional football.
Aston Martin Aramco competes in the FIA Formula One World Championship, representing one of ten constructor teams in the premier class of international auto racing. The team operates under the Aston Martin brand, the British luxury sports car manufacturer.
The investment marks another American sports franchise owner entering the Formula One arena, as the racing series has experienced growing popularity in the United States in recent years. Formula One has expanded its presence in North America with multiple race venues, including events in Miami, Las Vegas, and Austin, Texas.
Johnson's dual role as chairman of an NFL franchise and vice chairman of a Formula One team places him among a select group of sports executives with ownership stakes spanning multiple major international sports properties.
