Jonathan Van Ness Rehomes Dog After Cat Injury

Jonathan Van Ness, the celebrity hairstylist known for their work on Queer Eye, has revealed they were forced to make a heartbreaking decision regarding their family pets following a violent incident that left one of their cats severely injured.

The 39-year-old announced on Friday, June 27, that they had rehomed their pit bull mix George after the dog attacked their cat Liza, breaking her jaw in the process. The incident occurred approximately three weeks prior, on June 2, when the animals encountered each other on a staircase in the home Van Ness shares with husband Mark Peacock.

"This has been such a devastating event and I'm sharing to say for every animal family, its not easy, but Im so glad we can show up for these creatures & each other," Van Ness wrote in an Instagram post detailing the ordeal.

According to Van Ness, the confrontation began when Liza and George attempted to pass each other on the stairs. The cat responded with a defensive swat, which triggered an unexpected aggressive reaction from the dog. Prior to this incident, the couple maintained a multi-pet household with eight animals: five cats and three dogs, all of whom had coexisted peacefully.

"[George] wasn't like biting her, but roughhousing [and] going for her and ended up breaking her jaw," Van Ness explained in the social media post. "I got George off of her, I couldn't tell what the immediate damage was until I got to Liza and saw what I knew was a broken jaw."

The television personality described the chaotic scene that followed, recounting how they began screaming and crying for Peacock to assist in getting Liza to safety. The couple rushed the injured cat to a local veterinary hospital for emergency surgery, with Van Ness uncertain whether their pet would survive the trauma.

"I knew instantly that if she made it, we weren't gonna be able to keep George and thank God for the people at the animal hospital, they performed a literal miracle on her," Van Ness stated. "I didn't think she was gonna make it, and I thought I was gonna cancel my shows."

Following Liza's successful surgery and recovery, Van Ness and Peacock made the decision to immediately remove George from their home. The dog, who had lived with the family for four years, was placed in a foster home where he would be the sole pet.

"[George has] been with us for four years, all the animals got along so well for the most part and this just came completely out of the blue. It's been so gut wrenching," Van Ness shared. The couple theorized that George may not be suited for a multi-pet environment and would thrive better as the only animal in a household.

The announcement generated significant discussion on social media, with responses divided between those questioning the decision and others supporting the couple's choice to prioritize safety. Some commenters questioned why the cat was not rehomed instead, noting that Liza had initiated the confrontation and that George had no prior history of aggression.
