Justin Timberlake will confront two of the most scrutinized episodes of his public life in a forthcoming four-part docuseries, according to Variety. The Apple TV project is scheduled to debut in December, and it reportedly will feature Janet Jackson speaking about the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show that became known as the "wardrobe malfunction."
During that performance, Timberlake exposed Jackson's breast on live television, an incident that generated intense public debate and shaped both artists' careers for years afterward. Jackson's reported participation gives the series a rare opportunity to present her perspective on an event that has been discussed largely without her direct commentary.
The docuseries also is expected to address recent remarks by Britney Spears, Timberlake's former girlfriend. In her 2023 memoir, Spears made a series of assertions about their time together, among them that she conceived a child with Timberlake and underwent an abortion. Timberlake and Spears were a couple from 1999 to 2002, and the end of their relationship drew enormous media attention during that period.
In 2021, Timberlake issued public apologies to both Jackson and Spears. In those statements, he acknowledged that he had gained advantages from a culture that permitted misogyny and racism. The forthcoming series appears positioned to revisit that reckoning alongside the original controversies.
TMZ.com reported that representatives for Timberlake, Jackson and Apple had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication. The docuseries is set to arrive on Apple TV in December, though a specific premiere date has not been announced.
