Portland's Adult Soap Box Derby Celebrates 27th Year

Thousands of Portlanders gathered at Mt. Tabor Park on August 15 to witness the 27th annual Portland Adult Soap Box Derby, where 42 handcrafted vehicles transformed a gravity-powered race into an elaborate celebration of artistic expression and community spirit.

Unlike traditional soap box derbies that emphasize speed and aerodynamic precision, Portland's version prioritizes imagination and spectacle. This year's entries demonstrated remarkable creativity, featuring designs ranging from prehistoric cartoon vehicles to marine life and even a recreation of Oregon's infamous exploding whale incident.

John Nurse constructed a dragon vehicle following specifications drawn by his 10-year-old child, assembling the creation from hula hoops, the frame of a 1979 Honda Odyssey ATV, and spray insulation foam. "My kid drew a picture, and then it was up to me to figure out how to build it," Nurse told NPR. "How many times do you get to race a dragon down a volcano?"

The reference to Mt. Tabor as a volcano is technically accurate, as the park sits atop an extinct volcanic formation. The location provides the essential ingredient for soap box racing: a steep downhill course where gravity alone propels the vehicles.

Among the other notable entries were a zamboni themed after Heated Rivalry and dubbed "The Ice Melter," a massive sloth head, and vehicles styled as the Flintstones car and the Muppets character Animal. Brittany England, who helped create the Rocky Roadster ice cream truck entry, praised the atmosphere. "It's always so much fun," England told NPR. "There's so many people, the vibes are great, the energy's awesome."

The event operates under minimal regulations, requiring only helmets, safety training, and functional brakes. Beyond those essentials, participants enjoy complete creative freedom. Builders employ diverse materials including wood, metal, plastic, fake fur, and hot-glued mirror tiles to realize their visions.

David Paulsen, who serves as president of the Portland Adult Soap Box Derby, characterized the gathering as an annual celebration the city hosts for itself. His own involvement began in 1997 after witnessing his first race. "I saw it, and I knew that they were my kindred spirits," Paulsen told NPR, describing that inaugural experience as "booger-welded garbage cars racing down a mountain."

The tradition of gravity-powered racing extends back more than a century. Charlie Chaplin appeared in Kid Auto Races in Venice in 1914, documenting what was sometimes called a "pushmobile" race. The activity gained widespread recognition during the 1930s when Ohio launched a national competition that continues today as the Soap Box Derby World Championships. The races became embedded in American popular culture, appearing in television programs including Dennis the Menace, Bewitched, and The Danny Thomas Show.

While competitive soap box derbies evolved toward increasingly technical specifications—incorporating fiberglass bodies and titanium bushings to maximize velocity—Portland's adult version deliberately diverged from that trajectory. The focus shifted from engineering optimization to artistic ambition and communal enjoyment.

Spectators arrived with folding chairs and blankets, settling in for hours of entertainment as the unconventional vehicles descended the hill. Organizers report that attendance has increased annually, with several thousand people present for this year's event.

Despite their whimsical appearances—vehicles shaped like athletic socks or deep-sea anglerfish—the cars achieve substantial speeds. All participants must sign waivers acknowledging the inherent risks before racing. Michael Orczyk, who piloted a Conestoga wagon down the course, identified the appeal as "the zaniness, and the slight threat of danger," according to NPR.

The derby functions as a nonprofit organization staffed entirely by volunteers who handle tasks from pre-event brush clearing to post-race cleanup. The fire department maintains a presence at the event for safety purposes, arriving in their own miniature red soap box derby vehicle.
