Robert Carradine endured a two-decade battle with mental illness before his death in February, according to a Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's report that reveals the extent of the actor's struggles in his final years.
The actor, recognized for his performances in "Revenge of the Nerds," "Lizzie McGuire," and "The Long Riders," had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and suffered from severe depression and anxiety, his daughter informed investigators following his passing, according to the report obtained by TMZ.com. She told authorities her father had grappled with mental illness for approximately 20 years and was taking multiple medications to manage his conditions.
The medical examiner's report indicates that Carradine checked himself into a Los Angeles psychiatric hospital where he had previously received treatment due to ongoing suicidal ideation. The facility was familiar to the actor, who had sought help there in the past for his mental health challenges.
The following day, a hospital employee went to Carradine's room to inform him that his daughter was on the telephone. Upon entering, the employee discovered the actor hanging and unresponsive. The report states he was in cardiac arrest when found. No suicide note was located at the scene.
Medical personnel immediately attempted resuscitation before transferring Carradine to an intensive care unit. Despite their efforts, the actor died weeks later on February 23.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death a suicide. The official cause of death was listed as a brain injury associated with hanging.
Carradine's death underscores the persistent nature of mental health struggles and the importance of ongoing treatment and support. His career spanned decades, with memorable roles that brought joy to audiences even as he privately battled severe psychological challenges.
