In a recent interview, the 46-year-old Matlock star revealed the depth of these ongoing relationships. "I see them all the time," Jason Ritter explained, noting that the former cast members remain actively supportive of The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health, established by his stepmother Amy Yasbeck.
The foundation addresses the medical condition that claimed John Ritter's life in 2003. While rehearsing on the 8 Simple Rules set that year, the beloved actor suddenly experienced heart attack-like symptoms. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where physicians diagnosed an aortic dissection—a tear in the inner layer of the body's main artery. Despite emergency surgery, John Ritter was pronounced dead hours later at age 54.
The production halted briefly following the tragedy. Network executives and producers ultimately decided to write the character Paul Hennessy out of the series. In an episode titled "Goodbye" that aired later in 2003, Paul's wife Cate, portrayed by Katey Sagal, received devastating news that her husband had collapsed and died in a grocery store, leaving her and their three teenage children to navigate their loss.
For Jason Ritter, the experience created an unusual kinship with the young actors who played his father's television children. "In some weird way, especially with Kaley, Amy and Martin, it almost feels like we all lost the same dad at the same time," he reflected. "He was such a wonderful set dad to them. They clearly love him so much, and so do we. It kind of bonded us forever in a way."
