The newly released photograph shows the two actors recreating a well-known interview the couple gave months after JonBenét died, according to TMZ.com. McCarthy's transformation in the role has drawn attention for how completely she disappears into the part.
The project, titled "The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey," centers on one of the most closely followed criminal cases in modern American history. JonBenét, who was 6 years old, was found dead inside her family home on December 26, 1996. Police never identified who murdered her.
For years afterward, her parents faced intense public backlash over the situation, with some members of the public blaming them for their daughter's death, a charge they adamantly denied.
The casting of McCarthy and Owen places two established performers at the center of a story that has remained a subject of public fascination for nearly three decades. The film's release date has not been announced.
