MAYS LANDING - State authorities have taken over the investigation of a deadly collision in Mays Landing that claimed two lives Saturday morning, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office confirmed.
The crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, where Route 50 meets Third Street. Two adults died in the collision, though their names have not been released publicly.
The Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is now leading the probe alongside the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. Both agencies are working to determine what led to the fatal incident, according to a statement from prosecutors.
Why state investigators are involved comes down to a 2019 state statute. Under N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), the Attorney General must investigate any fatality that happens when someone dies while interacting with police officers performing their duties or while in custody.
That same law mandates that every such investigation must go before a grand jury, which will review the evidence and decide whether criminal charges against any officers are warranted, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.
The investigation remains active, and officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the crash or what role, if any, law enforcement interaction played in the incident.
