Shares of Yum Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell, dropped 4.5 percent to less than $160 per share during regular trading hours. The decline continued into after-hours trading as investors responded to news of the ongoing health investigation.

According to The Washington Post, health officials are conducting an active investigation with leafy lettuce identified as the primary suspect in the cyclosporiasis outbreak. However, investigators have not ruled out other food items as potential sources. The investigation extends beyond Taco Bell locations and includes various potential sources for the outbreak.

In response to the investigation, Taco Bell has proactively removed several fresh ingredients from certain locations. The removed items include lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and the restaurant's cilantro-onion blend. This precautionary measure remains in effect while health officials work to identify the source of the illness.

The company emphasized that no definitive connection has been established between its restaurants and the outbreak. "Public health officials have not confirmed a link to Taco Bell or any specific ingredient, supplier, restaurant or retailer," Taco Bell said in a statement to Reuters.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the Cyclospora parasite and typically results in gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. The illness is commonly associated with contaminated fresh produce and can persist for weeks if left untreated.

The stock market reaction demonstrates investor concern about potential impacts on the fast-food chain's reputation and sales, even as the investigation remains ongoing and no conclusive link has been established. The situation continues to develop as health officials work to trace the source of the outbreak and determine whether any specific restaurant chain or supplier is responsible.
