Three people were killed and four others wounded, including a 2-year-old child, when gunfire erupted at the Bite of Seattle food festival Sunday night, according to Seattle police.
The shooting occurred at the Seattle Center, located just one block from the Space Needle, during the annual three-day food festival. Video footage captured the chaotic moments as vendors and attendees scrambled for safety when shots rang out.
In footage posted to social media, a vendor selling Hawaiian honeycomb treats can be heard making his sales pitch before gunshots interrupt the scene. The vendor immediately orders his employee to grab the cash register and tips before both flee the area as panicked festival-goers duck for cover.
Two victims, a 19-year-old and a 44-year-old, were pronounced dead at the scene. Four additional victims were transported to a local hospital, where a 56-year-old woman later died from her injuries. The remaining victims, including the toddler, were listed in stable condition.
Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis addressed reporters during a late Sunday press briefing, confirming that one suspect was in custody while authorities continued searching for a second gunman. Two firearms were recovered from the scene.
Investigators believe the incident involved two individuals shooting at each other, though Davis did not disclose a motive. He emphasized that the investigation remains active but assured the public there was no outstanding threat to the community.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson released a statement characterizing the shooting as an act of horrific violence and expressing gratitude to first responders for their rapid response to the emergency.
The Bite of Seattle is one of the city's signature summer events, drawing thousands of visitors annually to sample food from local restaurants and vendors. The festival's status following the shooting remains unclear as the investigation continues.
