White House Invokes Reporter's Children After Trump Confrontation

A confrontation between President Donald Trump and CNN reporter Kristen Holmes during a Monday, August 17 question-and-answer session in the Oval Office intensified after the event when an official White House social media account brought the journalist's children into its criticism of her reporting.

The incident began when Holmes, 40, questioned the 80-year-old president about recent comments from Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff. Holmes asked Trump to respond to Ossoff's claim that he would rather "travel with your aide Natalie Harp and build the ballroom than do your job as president," according to Us Weekly.

Trump requested that Holmes repeat the name of the person who made the allegations. "You mean Pee-Wee Herman? Pee-Wee Herman look-alike," the president responded, according to Us Weekly.

The president defended his activities, stating that he would prefer to focus on other matters. "No, I would much rather do other things. We're building a great facility here. We're fixing a White House that hasn't been taken care of," Trump said during the session.

The exchange grew more heated when Trump, addressing Holmes who was positioned off camera, instructed her to be "quiet," claiming she was being "disrespectful" in the presence of a 10-year-old guest being honored at the event, according to The Daily Beast. The president characterized the journalist as a "fake reporter" after she posed a follow-up question regarding his decision to scale back joint United States and South Korea military exercises.

Trump turned directly to the child present and asked, "Don't you find her disrespectful?" according to Us Weekly. He also described Holmes as a "loud, boisterous person."

Following the Oval Office session, the White House "rapid response" account on X—which states in its biography that it supports Trump's "America First agenda and holding the Fake News accountable," according to Us Weekly—published posts attacking Holmes. The account described her as "a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession," according to Us Weekly.

A second post from the White House account on Monday referenced Holmes' children directly. "Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question," the post stated, according to Us Weekly. "They will be sickened and embarrassed to have a parent be so callous and vindictive. It's quite troubling."

CNN issued a statement defending Holmes after the social media posts circulated widely. "Kristen Holmes is one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House," the network said in its Monday statement, according to Us Weekly. "This afternoon, she did her job and asked the President of the United States a tough, relevant, and newsworthy question on behalf of the American people," according to Us Weekly.

The network added that while public officials may challenge reporting they disagree with, personal attacks on journalists for asking questions fall below the standards of the office and contradict free press principles. CNN stated it stands firmly behind Holmes and rejects such attacks in the strongest possible terms.

Holmes appeared on The Lead With Jake Tapper and OutFront With Erin Burnett on Monday, where both broadcasts replayed Trump's remarks about her. However, Holmes did not directly address the controversy during either appearance.

This incident represents the latest in a pattern of confrontations between Trump and female journalists, particularly those working for CNN. Last month, Trump drew criticism for commenting on CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins' appearance during the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner on July 23.

"[Kaitlan is] a young, attractive woman. She never smiles," Trump said of Collins, 34, during the July event. "I said, 'Kaitlan, do you ever smile? Smile. You have a nice position, you're at CNN fake news, you should be a happy person. So smile, Kaitlan, just smile.'"

Trump also stated he had previously confused Collins with transgender actress Dylan Mulvaney after seeing Mulvaney on a beer can in 2023. When asked about Trump's comments targeting Collins and her appearance, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Us Weekly in a statement, "The liberal media can dish it but they can't take it."

Collins addressed the recent increase in attacks against her during the July 27 episode of The Daily Show. "I've always felt this, regardless of who's the president ... it's really not about me, and I don't want it to be about my reaction. If you let it become about that, then it becomes a back-and-forth between the two of us," she explained, according to Us Weekly. "Instead, I think it's more important to remind people in those moments when he is insulting me, he is criticizing me ... it's important to put the reminder back on the work, on the question, and on the non-answers that we get," according to Us Weekly.

Collins, who has covered Trump for 10 years, noted that she has listened to nearly all of his speeches and believes it is beneficial for people to hear them in their entirety. She stated she was not surprised when he insulted her during the White House Correspondents' Dinner, as such incidents occur regularly inside the Oval Office. What struck her most was the silence in the room, which was filled with Trump's staffers, cabinet members, allies, and Republicans in Congress during his remarks.
